i love Randy! he's SO cool! i wish i had a friend like him in real life. so if it's okay asking? who came up with randy designed? and what's it like working with other storyboard artist? is it hard work? fun?

Anonymous

Gah! I just realized this ask has been sitting in my inbox. Sorry Anon, deadline week!

While Jhonen Vasquez did some of the preliminary concepts and monster designs, most of the characters you see on screen are courtesy of Junpei Takayama. Just like boards though, what you see on screen is due to the hard work of a bunch of people… concept, cleanup, rotations, color. Then you have other artists who just deal with props and backgrounds and our art director and fellow cat lover, Otto Tang, heading it up. There’s actually a few Randy designers on tumblr and they could probably answer this stuff waaay better than I could.

Storyboarding is both fun and a lot of work. I usually advise anyone thinking of doing boards that they really LOVE boarding because you’re going to be putting a lot of hours into it. And it’ll be impossible to watch a movie normally anymore because you’ll be over analyzing everything. Or that could just be me because I overanalyze everything…

If you get a good crew to work with, you’re in for a good time. On Randy, we had a big room with a bullpen type setup so you could always turn around and chat with the other seven guys in the room. Or just call out random nonsense and watch the stupid enfold. A lot of stupid. A lot of geek. A lot of raunchy. Then more stupid. Randy and Howard levels of stupid.

(Note: This stream of thoughts was initially posted on twitter and seemed to engage many people, which you’ll see is a point of relevance after you read this.)

I recently heard comments in podcasts and have seen people talking about how Tumblr/Twitter/social media is such…

Lots of food for thought here for makers. Plus a little scary for artists creating anything that takes a massive amount of man hours (like long form comics) since it kinda paints an entire generation as voracious consumer junkies in need of a steady, disposable art fix. How much work do you put into something that will either be ignored or gobbled up and immediately forgotten for the next pretty shiny?

One day I will learn to stop being so stupid and anal about my thumbnailing process and just let the thumbs speak for themselves. Oy.

Me. All the time. Thing about TV is a lot of shows want layout like boards and it gets ingrained into you. I need to work harder to loosen up. Hahaha… irony.

vernargh said: Haha, of course IMDB doesn’t bother to list BG department… :’U

Actually it looks like quite a few people aren’t credited yet (myself included). Sometimes the studios will fill out the IMDB credits for you and sometimes they don’t. You and anyone else you know who’s worked on the show and sees they aren’t listed should go about adding yourselves because you deserve the credit.

Go to ‘full cast and crew’ link on the main Randy IMDB page. Scroll all the way to the bottom. You’ll see a button to ‘edit page’. Click that and sign in (either create an IMDB account or use a social network to log in). Choose what department your credit would be listed under and add 1 credit. Click the ‘continue’ button at the bottom of the page. That brings you to a chart where you can put in your details (name, episodes, occupation) and submit. IMDB then will go about doing whatever it does to verify your credit and once it does they’ll add them to the main page. I forgot how long it takes… A couple of days to a week or so? I just filled mine out today, so we’ll see.

I still find it super crazy that you worked on Kids Next Door as a storyboard artist. I totally adored that show as a kid, and now you're boarding it up for another show (RC9GN) that I just can't get enough of! What're the odds of that happening? Are you just that much of an awesome storyboardist?

Wow, KND fandomness! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words. KND was one of my earliest board jobs and a real learning experience, so I think I have alot to owe to working with a great, super talented crew helmed by the amazing Mr. Warburton. Some of my best memories in animation as of yet. Good times…

are you the storyboard artist for 9th grade ninja?! :D

Hiya! Well, I was lucky enough to be ONE of the board artists for Randy. We actually had eight storyboard people on the show, divided up into four teams of two. Bob Suarez was my board partner and we worked on 15 of the episodes together. There’s actually quite a few Randy artists here on tumblr, which is pretty cool!

If anyone’s been waiting for the Yiynova MSP19U Tablet monitor to come back in stock - there’s only 4 left! Managed to snag one, FINALLY.

Hey everyone - So if you’re following me, you know that I’m not really a ‘fandom’ guy; more of a ‘casual viewer’, hence why I don’t post fandom-related things very often.

However! I was having a conversation with Octoswan yesterday, who is an active member of the Tumblr-SPN…

This. I got in a conversation recently about the Hollywood writing system and I just couldn’t find a good way to really explain what happens to get either an episode or a film adapted or written. Honestly the system SOUNDS bizarre, trying to explain it to a person with no connections to the industry makes it sound like some sort of farce, but it’s pretty true. Also, what’s REALLY true is the fact that if the show is popular, then everyone wants to put some sort of thumbprint in it. Being in animation does distance me from the system but we’re still part of the entertainment industry so we do still see the insanity of it.

It’s amazing anything gets made, sometimes.

* nodding in agreement. *

And if this is animation, don’t forget to add all the extra rounds of notes for boards and animatic.
